Digital audio out of the box - digital audio effects in art and experimental music. While since the late 1990's laptops have become a common element in electronic music on stage in recent years there is a move away again from the laptop towards dedicated devices that perform one particular task. With the advent of platforms such as the BeagleBone Raspberry Pi, but also Arduino, efficient computing of digital audio has found a large interest amongst artists who create their own instruments or sounding objects usually within the context of open source software and hardware. In this talk I will show various examples of these applications of digital audio in the field of art and experimental music; and discuss how their development and discourse is embedded in the open source movement.

(Marco Donnarumma in collaboration with Marije Baalman) 'Nigredo' is an experience of altered self-perception by means of biophysical media – throwing visitors back on bare humanity. 'Nigredo is not for the faint of heart' say some. 'Nigredo is totally relaxing' say others. Nigredo is an experience of altered self-perception for one visitor at a time by means of biophysical media, created by Marco Donnarumma in collaboration with Marije Baalman. Carefully but resolutely the work pushes visitors to their individual physical and perceptual limits. Completely cut off from the hustle and bustle of the outside world wired and connected up with all manner of sensors and technological devices visitors become cyborgs for eight minutes while being thrown back on bare humanity. Intense auditory, visual and tactile stimuli performed by a machine with pinpoint precision are initiated by the pulsation of one’s own body. It is a feedback process that engages equally the human body and the machine triggering perceptions of one's own body that can only be rationally classified with hindsight. Nigredo is equally reminiscent of our uniformity and uniqueness – for all the immediacy of this self-experience trip, perceived now as too short, now as too long, may take us to the realm of both perceptual expanse and constraint.

The code we read on the screens of a livecoding performance is an expression of our compositional concepts. In this paper I reflect on the practice of livecoding from the concept of embodiment as proposed by Varela Thompson and Rosch (1991): how we as coders embody the code how machines can embody code and how we inevitably need to deal with the physicality of the machines and our own bodies that we use in our performances and how we adapt both our machines and bodies to enable our performances.

Modalities of sonic interaction

The workshop will give an introduction into the Modality toolkit, which simplifies creation of highly personalised electronic instruments in SuperCollider by introducing a common code interface. This allows for uniform access to HID, MIDI, OSC and GUI-based conrollers as well as switching of functionality, even at runtime. After a basic introduction to show how to hook up your own devices we will demonstrate and discuss some of the setups that we use in our own work and how Modality is used and not yet used in these setups. Together with Wouter Snoei.
