  • What the VAT?
    Workshop | 23 April 2024 | 16:00 - 18:00
Filing taxes isn’t the most pleasurable part of being a freelance artist. In this workshop we will make it a little easier by explaining the workings of Omzetbelasting, also known as BTW or VAT. Which rates should apply for selling a work of art, giving a lesson or a performance? Why is the gallery’s invoice so complicated to read? How do you invoice a client in another country? Should I apply for the small-entrepreneurs-rule? VAT on which costs is deductible? How can I avoid paying VAT on purchases from other EU-countries?

  • Artist Survival Guide: Budgeting for a Sustainable Practice
    Workshop | 31 October 2023 | 16:00 - 18:00
Art school may have taught you how to experiment, make, and critique, but if you recently graduated, you might be finding yourself at a loss when it comes to navigating the larger cultural sector. This is where the Artist Survival Guide comes in. The Artist Survival Guide is a workshop series by iii members covering entrepreneurial survival skills such as grant writing, budgeting, negotiating with curators, and promoting your work. The workshop is aimed at recent, soon-to-be art school graduates and working artists looking to further professionalise their practice. Marije will guide you through how to make a personal budget as a working artist, and how to create a realistic project budget

  • Wind Instrument Building workshop
    Workshop | 17 June 2022 | 13:30 - 18:00
Flying dragons, deers, owls, octopus, or parrots - in different languages across the world, kites are named in all sorts of imaginary ways. In this wind instrument building workshop, we will explore how kites fly, try to measure this with self-built sensors, and use the data to create sound or visuals to bring alive the dragons, deers, owls, octopus and parrots. Hosted together with Enrique Tomás

  • Sounding Kite workshop in Copenhagen
    Workshop | 19 March 2022 | 12:30 - 17:30
We explore kites as musical instruments. The workshop is facilitate by the Dutch artist and researcher, Marije Baalman. She works in the field of interactive sound art. During the workshop we will build a simple kite (sled kite) with electronically conductive materials with which we can sense the air pressure and turbulation on the kite. We will experiment with different ways of building sensors for the kite. Thereafter, the sensed data will be sent to a computer, where it is visualized and sonified in realtime. Participants will learn about kite building, building sensors from conductive materials, and using sensor data to create sound. This workshop is a part “Play it on the Sky – Borderless Praxis with Kites“ which is Faculty of Senses’s continuous interest on the kite as a form of art. Last year in September, we held the workshop “How can we translate an urban space into kite?” by Toshie Takeuchi, Victor Valqui Vidal and Anne Eisensee. Play it on the Sky is an experimental platform to explore building and flying kites; its traditional yet generic multicultural aspect, its sensoriality, its potential for metaphorical story-telling, it as community building and it as manifestation. Play it on the Sky wishes to continue making space for building, gathering and happenings over a long term.

  • On-the-fly Hacklab at ZKM
    Workshop | 28 - 30 January 2022
Join the »on-the-fly: Live Coding Hacklab« 2022! From January 28-30, 2022, all coding enthusiasts can program collaboratively with international experts. The weekend will be opened by a variety of exciting live coding performances. The Hacklab will connect live coding with areas ranging from machine learning to spatial sound to programming visuals. There will also be a special on the format of Algorave. Each of these areas will be supervised by international mentors: Alexandra Cárdenas, Anna Xambó Sedó, Antonio Roberts, Iván Paz, Lina Bautista and Marije Baalman. On the occasion of and during the two-day Hacklab, live coding masterclasses (with Shelly Knotts, Olivia Jack and Kıvanç Tatar) and workshops for beginners (children, teenagers and adults) will be offered. The results of the workshops will be presented in evening presentations and »from scratch sessions«.

    Workshop | 8 - 22 January 2020 | 10:30 - 16:30
In this three-day workshop, led by Marije Baalman and Simon Dogger, you can learn how to design and build a functional prototype that improves accessibility for people with a visual impairment. We will work together as a group and smaller subgroups, from discussion, concept and experiment to realisation, to give you the knowledge, tools and support towards realising your own design. Dates are January 8, 15 and 22.

  • The Malbody Centre - exploring touch interactions
    Workshop | 24 November 2017 | 13:00 - 17:00
In this workshop we will take a look together at possible interactions using touch. During the workshop we will do 3 rounds of brainstorming and experimentation both with and without technology, and with the body. What does it mean to touch someone else? How does this depend on the (social) situation and the location on the body? How can bodies touch each other? How can you describe how it feels to be touched? What are different qualities of touching? After this initial physical brainstorm, we will look at and experiment with different technological prototypes for measuring touch and different qualities of touch and haptic technologies. In the final part of the workshop we will come up with different types of interaction through mediated touch and try them out in a playful way. The workshop welcomes all people with an interest in the sense of touch and is aiming for a diversity of participants, e.g. with a background in body-based practices, physical computing hackers, game designers, and so on.

  • Modalities of sonic interaction
    Workshop | 1 July 2015
The workshop will give an introduction into the Modality toolkit, which simplifies creation of highly personalised electronic instruments in SuperCollider by introducing a common code interface. This allows for uniform access to HID, MIDI, OSC and GUI-based conrollers as well as switching of functionality, even at runtime. After a basic introduction to show how to hook up your own devices we will demonstrate and discuss some of the setups that we use in our own work and how Modality is used and not yet used in these setups. Together with Wouter Snoei.

  • From Interface to Instrument
    Workshop | 26 - 28 October 2012
MIDI keyboards, slider boxes, joysticks, gamepads are ubiquitous interfaces right now to the computers that surround us. To turn these interfaces into musical instruments there are various steps to guide the design of a playable instrument. In this seminar we will explore the basics of how to access various interfaces from SuperCollider strategies to explore the semantics of the interfaces that we use and the data that they generate and methods of mapping these to control sonic processes.
