Verlust included in AUDIOSPHERE: Sound Experimentation 1980-2020
The sound piece "Verlust" is included in the exhibition AUDIOSPHERE: Social Experimental Audio, Pre- and Post-Internet, put together by Francisco Lopez.
By way of a selection of hundreds of sound works, Audiosphere, Social Experimental Audio, Pre- and Post-Internet looks to cover an historical and cultural void in terms of the recognition, exhibition and analysis of a key part of the recent changes that have taken place in the artistic conception of sound creation.
Conceived from a social perspective, and with the aim of revealing and providing context to reflect upon and discuss the techno-cultural changes that have occurred since the 1980s, the exhibition will present the work of a broad number of experimental sound artists, hailing from all over the world, the majority unknown to the contemporary art spectator.
The show will revolve around seven sections, each one addressing different social, technological, historical and cultural processes: genealogies, networks, mega accessibility, cyborgisation, aesthetogenesis, recombination and rights. Although such processes have been generated collectively and today are widespread, they have not been sufficiently identified, acknowledged or analysed artistically.
Audiosphere thus seeks to constitute a non-conceptual, large-scale contemporary art exhibition with no images or objects, underpinned solely by sound works and an exhibition design that facilitates experiential, profound and prolonged listening.

Hosting online SuperCollider meetup at NOTAM
SuperCollider is an open source framework for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. It's one of the most popular and widely used programming environments for sound work and is available for free for all platforms – it can even be embedded on micro computers like the Raspberry Pi and Bela. SuperCollider is useful for many things: Algorithmic composition, generative music, all things computer music, livecode performances, in conjunction with microcontrollers and sensors, for installation work, multi channel work, dsp, research, ambisonics or simply sound hacking. At these meetups, SuperCollider users of all skill levels get together to share ideas, frustrations, help eachother and show off projects and workflows in an inspiring and friendly way.

The goal of the 3 day meeting is for artists to work on documenting their own instrument, performance, installation and/or other interactive project. This process is guided by Marije Baalman. Participants are invited to share their documentation and describe their process during the work session. That way the participants can build feedback and dialogue techniques that will access more in-depth insights of their work and that of others. The work session is developed in parallel with the writing of the book "Just a question of mapping".

10 minute livecoding challenge
Performing a remake of 'Code LiveCode Live' for the 10 minute livecoding challenge, set up by Creative Coding Utrecht.
I performed this piece last time in 2014. To make it possible to redo the performance, I had to revise some of the backend code of accessing the ThinkPad's sensors, and this time I had access to the touchpad (previously I could not access that data). The motiontracking, I had to run from a second laptop, x-forwarding the ssh session to have the image on screen of the laptop on which I perform. The video is recorded with OBS Studio.

Moderating NC_CL #2 - Flesh
“Flesh — not as passive matter, but as a physical, relational field of interaction, intensities, techniques, histories, traces, and relics of experienced information. Our body is never “pure” flesh but is always already extending into an elaborate circuitry of technologies of all sorts. Physical indeed, but a physicality that was and is always mediated and remediated as it is pervaded by the existence of other objects; other relations and agencies — human and nonhuman.” — Myriam Van Imschoot, Rests in Pieces On Scores, Notation and the Trace in Dance (2010). This evening of performances will focus on embodiment through practices of live coding. The stage becomes a temporary site for experimenting with algorithmic composition — from body to language; words to flesh; the oral to the written — presenting an ecology of scores and scripts for movement to unfold and new relations to emerge.

Presentation at IAC - Interactive arts – translating gestures to experience (CANCELED)
How can gestures through the use of sensors and controllers, computational processing be translated to output media, such as sound, light and video? That is the topic of the book Just a question of mapping that Marije Baalman is currently working on. Drawing from her own experience of working in the field as artist and researcher, and from case studies with musical instrument inventors and performers, choreographers for interactive dance, software engineers and media artists, she is bringing together insights from different fields into how to approach this question. The book’s aim is to bridge aesthetical concepts and technological implementations, and to be used as a handbook for artists, researchers and teachers who are in the field, or coming into the field. This presentation is part of my Norway tour for the book "Just a question of mapping".

Presentation at BEK - Personal retrospective on mapping in my artistic projects (CANCELED)
Marije Baalman is currently writing a book on mapping: how can gestures through the use of sensors and controllers, computational processing be translated to output media, such as sound, light and video. Her motivation comes from her own artistic work, where the topic of mapping has played a core part since 2001, when she started building her first digital musical instrument, the STRIMIDILATOR. Over the past 19 years, she has made digital instruments, participative installations, dance performances, and kites (wind instruments). In the presentation she will trace through these numerous projects and discuss the different approaches to mapping that she explored in these projects. "the machine is learning" at the Live Interfaces conference
The performance "the machine is learning" evolved out of the GeCoLa project. Machine learning is hailed as both the solution to our current day problems, as well as one of the most threatening things to life as we know it. The performance the machine is learning is a theatrical performance highlighting the process of training a machine with realtime gestures: the labour that is absent from most dialogues on machine learning.

Presentation at Faculty of Senses - Aesthetics of mapping in interactive arts and embodiment
“There is nothing more human than the machine” Gottfried Willem Raes said during a panel discussion at the NIME 2007. Humans have been making technology to extend the capabilities of their bodies (including the mind) for milennia. Currently, digital technologies are at the forefront of this – and technology is often used as a synonym for digital technology. Interactive technologies provide ways for us to explore different senses of our body. In different artistic disciplines there are various approaches. In music the creating of digital musical instruments allow us to explore new musical concepts in an embodied way. In dance, the use of interactive technologies can change our sense of the body, as how we move affects the environment in a different way. Interactive technologies can help us to experience physical phenomena that normally we cannot perceive with our senses. To achieve these new experiences for our bodies we make use of interactive systems consisting of sensors, electronics and algorithms. The design of these systems is often called ‘mapping’: from gesture to sound, light, haptics or video. While the implementation often requires ‘engineering’ skills, the choices are motivated by the aesthetic concepts for the experience the artist wants to create. The choices that we make for these systems, determine how the system perceives and acts in the world, and thus how these systems can interact with us and vice versa. In the talk, I want to discuss the different aesthetic motivations and how these relate to notions of embodiment and possible design approaches for creating these systems.
