Pillow phones

The setup at the Artefact exhibition was that the audience would watch the kites from the Queen's Balcony opposite of the large roof on top of the theatre hall. The audience would sit on sitting bags. For the special, private listening experience, I created pillow phones togeter with Tineken van Hilten - using embroided spirals of copper thread and strong magnets we made speakers: as a current is going through the copper thread, it creates a magnetic field that interferes with the magnet's field, because of this, the cloth starts to vibrate. This vibration stays fairly low in volume - hence we rather call them softspeakers than loudspeakers.

For the shape of the pillows we were inspired by the kite designs that I made, which used a lot of triangles - so we tried to bring in the triangular form back into the pillow. Also, we use the same fabric as that the kites are made of - rip-stop nylon - in the colours that the two kites have to create a correspondence with the kites that are flown.
